Missoula would not be an outdoors paradise if it did not have a few good rivers, and we have more than a few. There are places to park and surf, float, creek, or just run the river. The most common places are listed below, but countless others remain. Stop in and chat with our well-informed paddlers. We will be more than happy to discuss the latest conditions and play spots.
Brennan's Wave -
The newest addition to the Missoula Paddling Community, Brennan's wave is located just out our back door. This moderate play spot is the perfect place to dial in a new play move. At most water levels, this wave will allow for surfing, spinning, cartwheels, loops, helixes, and anything else you might want to try. Plus, there is super-friendly eddy service.
Alberton Gorge - This portion of the Clark Fork, located about half an hour east of Missoula on I-90, is the most popular white-water rafting and kayaking location, with Class II, III, and a seasonal Class IV (Tumbleweed). Expect a crowd on the weekends, with guide companies sending many rafts down, but during the weekdays it is not uncommon to have the river to yourself. The most common raft put-in is at Exit 70 (Cyr), and the Fish Creek Exit is popular with kayakers, depending on the CFS. Check out the map of the Alberton Gorge below.
Lochsa River - The Lochsa is another great area river. Class III and IV (with an occasional V) rapids provide great technical and non-stop whitewater for those with appropriate skills. Many USFS campgrounds exist along the river, with a hot-spring here and there. Take Highway 93 south from Missoula to Lolo. Turn right on Highway 12, go over Lolo Pass and into Idaho. The put-in is generally near mile marker 138, and the take-out near mile marker 120. Parking is on the side of the highway.
Blackfoot River - The Blackfoot offers ideal conditions for beginner kayakers. Practice Eddy Turns and your roll while enjoying the great Montana scenery. If a lazy day escaping the heat is to your liking, tube down any one of the many stretches. The most popular put-in area is at Johnsrud Park, which is off Highway 200 about 20 miles east of Missoula. If you feel like surfing, then head to The Ledge, a nice surf-wave, which is in during high water.
