Bass Creek - This ice climbing location has good ice when the snow conditions are right, and because the flows are a few miles from the trailhead, you can often avoid the crowds. Take Highway 93 south from Missoula. Bass Creek is located between Stevensville and Florence.
Blodgett Canyon - Blodgett Canyon has some good flows in the winter. Travel south on Highway 93 from Missoula towards Hamilton. The canyon is a few miles north of Hamilton, with an obviously marked trailhead. Look for ice on the north side of the canyon, at Blodgett Falls, and at the seeps across from Blodgett Falls.
Hyalite Canyon - Some of the best ice in the northwest is just a few hours from Missoula. Drive on I-90 east towards Bozeman, take exit 305, follow 19th Street south until you reach Hyalite Canyon Road. Many great routes exist at various locations up the Canyon, with the main Hyalite Parking Lot 14 miles up the road. A snowmobile can make travel easier in the winter.
Mission Falls - Mission Falls has quality ice when many other locations don't. A few miles of hiking brings you to this great ice climbing area on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Buy a tribal permit before you head out to ensure that you climb legally. Head north from Missoula on Highway 93 towards St. Ignatius. Mission Falls is to your left (east).
Finley Creek - Located near Placid Lake, Finley Creek offers excellent ice without the crowds. Head on Highway 200 towards Great Falls, then go north on Highway 83 at the Clearwater Junction. Take a left as if you are going to Placid Lake and continue to the north-west end of the lake, where Finley Creek takes off to the west.
